[belgrand-veille] Use of mobile positioning data for tourism statistics

Eurostat
Feasibility study on the use of mobile positioning data for tourism statistics
New data sources not primarily serving statistical purposes offer a big potential for statisticians. Nowadays most European citizens carry mobile phones with them wherever they go, meaning the Call Detail Records stored by mobile network operators can be a gigantic source for monitoring mobility, travel and tourism.
During the past two years, Unit G-3 "Short-term business statistics and tourism" conducted a feasibility study on the use of mobile positioning data for statistics, in particular focusing on official tourism statistics. The comprehensive deliverables of the Estonian-Finnish-German-French consortium that carried out the feasibility study can now be consulted on the Eurostat website.
The Consolidated Report provides a brief summary of the main outcomes of the project and of the different tasks. The other reports tackle more specific aspects such as the access to mobile phone data, the methodological issues linked to its use and the  benefits and risks. Although tourism statistics were the backbone for this study, most of the reports are relevant for other areas of statistics too, while the discussion of the feasibility of accessing and using such data can be applicable to accessing and using big data in general.
